Flu Prevention in the Workplace, Cost Effective Immunizations

Kaiser Permanente ClinicianInfluenza (“the flu”) is more serious and costly than the common cold, so do everything you can to prevent it. It is estimated that each year between 5% and 20% of the U.S. population will get the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2003 American businesses’ lost earnings due to annual influenza epidemics was $16.3 billion.

A flu shot is your best defense. The vaccine is safe, won’t make you sick, and generally has few side effects.

It pays off to reduce the spread of flu at work. The first way to break the chain includes getting a flu vaccine. The typical incubation period for the flu is one to four days. Adults can be contagious from the day before symptoms begin through five to 10 days after the illness starts. A regular case of the flu typically resolves after three to seven days for the majority of people, although cough and fatigue can persist for more than two weeks. Offering employees an on-site flu shot clinic is virtually cost free when compared  to the cost of lost productivity due to absenteeism.
